The project Beta maṣāḥǝft: Manuscripts of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung) at the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies at Universität Hamburg invites applications for a
of € 1,250 per month (tax free) for a duration of up to three years to begin on 1 April 2017.
The project Beta maṣāḥǝft: Manuscripts of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung) is a long-term project funded within the framework of the German Academies’ Programme (coordinated by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities) under survey of the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg. It aims at creating a virtual research environment that shall manage complex data related to predominantly Christian manuscript tradition of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Highlands. With detailed manuscript descriptions as a starting point, the project collects and manages information on the texts transmitted in the manuscripts and their authors, on the scribes and other historical persons as well as places and networks connected with the manuscript production and circulation. The first project phase places special attention on codicology, palaeography, and manuscript production in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and the PhD projects are expected to contribute to research in this field.

We are looking for highly motivated students with an MA or equivalent degree in Ethiopian studies, Semitic studies, Art history or related field with a clear interest in Ethiopian/Eritrean manuscript tradition.
Applicants are asked to apply within 15 December 2016 with a single PDF file containing (1) research proposal compatible with the project’s objectives, (2) a letter of motivation specifying the relevance of the research proposal for the Beta maṣāḥǝft project and the importance of the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies as research environment, (3) CV (with a list of publications, if applicable), (4) two letters of recommendation from University professors dating from not earlier than the last three months, and (5) copies of BA, MA or other relevant certificates, to be sent by email to the Director of the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alessandro Bausi at alessandro.bausi"AT"uni-hamburg.de.
